Behind the programme
The story and purpose
Introduction
Career guidance and exposure play a critical role in shaping the aspirations of young people, especially at the secondary school level. Many students possess the passion and potential to excel in health-related careers but often lack access to the information, mentorship, and encouragement needed to pursue such paths confidently.
Recognizing this gap, Health enLight Initiative organized a Career Health Talk Session at Aje Comprehensive High School, Yaba to educate and inspire students about the wide range of opportunities available in the healthcare sector. The session created a platform for students to learn directly from health advocates and professionals while gaining valuable insights into the skills, dedication, and impact associated with careers in health.
The atmosphere was interactive and inspiring, with students actively participating, asking questions, and expressing curiosity about their future possibilities within the health field.
Our objective
The objectives of the Career Health Talk Session were to:
Increase students’ awareness of the different career opportunities within the health sector. Educate students on the importance of healthcare professionals in society. Inspire students to pursue meaningful and impactful careers in health. Provide mentorship, guidance, and real-life insights into health professions. Encourage leadership, purpose-driven learning, and community impact among young people. Bridge the information gap between secondary school students and professional career opportunities in healthcare.
The impact
The outreach session had a meaningful impact on the students of Aje School, Lagos. Many students gained a broader understanding of healthcare careers and discovered opportunities they had never previously considered. The discussions helped reshape perceptions about the health sector, showing students that healthcare extends beyond medicine and nursing into fields such as public health, mental health, pharmacy, medical laboratory science, nutrition, research, physiotherapy, and health technology. The session also sparked curiosity, confidence, and ambition among participants, encouraging them to think intentionally about their future careers and educational goals. Through interactive engagement and mentorship, students were reminded that their background does not limit their potential and that they, too, can become future health leaders and changemakers in their communities.
