Behind the programme
The story and purpose
Introduction
The School Health Club session was designed as an interactive and engaging experience for students. We introduced the concept of the School Health Club, clearly outlining its purpose, structure, and the vital role students play as peer educators and health advocates. Through discussions, practical demonstrations, and relatable examples, students were guided on what it truly means to be healthy—not just physically, but mentally and socially. Key topics covered included personal hygiene practices, the importance of cleanliness in preventing diseases, and everyday habits that contribute to overall well-being. Students were encouraged to ask questions, share their experiences, and actively participate in the session. This approach created a safe and inclusive learning environment where curiosity was welcomed and learning felt practical and applicable to their daily lives.
Our objective
The primary objectives of the outreach were to: - Introduce and establish the School Health Club within Aje Comprehensive School - Equip students with foundational knowledge of personal hygiene and healthy living - Inspire students to take ownership of their health and influence their peers positively - Build a network of young health ambassadors who can sustain health-promoting behaviors within the school - Promote preventive health practices as a key strategy for reducing disease burden in communities
The impact
The School Health Club Project had a noticeable and immediate impact on the students. Many demonstrated an improved understanding of personal hygiene and expressed excitement about being part of the School Health Club. Students showed increased confidence in discussing health-related topics and a willingness to adopt healthier habits. The session also sparked a sense of responsibility among participants, with several students eager to take on leadership roles within the club. In the long term, this initiative is expected to foster a culture of health awareness within the school, reduce preventable illnesses through better hygiene practices, and empower students to become advocates for health in their homes and communities.
